The first of the off-season camps begins today with the rookies reporting to Alameda. The Raiders have said they expect a full turnout of rookies for the three-day camp which starts Friday and runs through Sunday.
Among those expected to attend are the team's ten draft picks along with their 14 undrafted free agent signees. This camp will be filled out by a sizable group of undrafted free agents who are here purely on a tryout basis.
Typically there are around 30 players trying out for the team, though the team has not announced which players they have invited. Of those NFL hopefuls, the team will select a handful of players to sign to undrafted free agent contracts.
The team currently has four open roster spots which can be filled by those players who impress in tryouts. That means there will be a lot more players receiving bad news than those sticking around.
So often you hear rookie players talk about how the reality of being on an NFL team won't really sink in until they take that practice field for the first time. Well, each of the drafted and UDFA signed rookies received their numbers on Thursday and will don that jersey and take the practice field for the first time today.
It is hard to even imagine how that moment will feel. Some mixture of ecstasy, adrenaline, and anxiety.
We will get our first look at the newest Raiders on Saturday when media is allowed into practice. A week later, it's on to OTA's.
