There has been a lot of confusion about why the Raiders would keep four quarterbacks and two punters on the final 53 roster. The confusion stems from there being no way that they should waste those roster spots on players that wouldn't even see the field. Things have cleared up a bit already though as the Raiders have made a flurry of moves, including confirming the releasing of 4th round rookie QB Tyler Wilson and veteran punter Chris Kluwe.
So much for the freak out fest with #Raiders keeping two QB's and two Punters. They cut Wilson, Kluwe not 24 hours later— Levi Damien (@LeviDamien) September 1, 2013
In the punting competition the Raiders needed to see consistency from Marquette King and he came through with flying colors. Chris Kluwe actually broke the news himself on Twitter of his impending release with a classy tweet thanking the Raiders and the fans. He likely will not be out of work for very long.
Thanks to everyone at the Raiders for the opportunity this preseason. It was a blast. @MarquetteKing's got a bright future with you guys!— Chris Kluwe (@ChrisWarcraft) September 1, 2013
Taking Tyler Wilson and Chris Kluwe's roster spots are OG from Baltimore Antoine McClain and DE from Cleveland Bryan Sanford, also confirmed by the Raiders. McClain is a player that went undrafted in 2012 and spent the year on the Ravens practice squad. At 6'5 and 336lbs Antoine is a big guy which is likely the reason the Raiders were interested in adding him to their power blocking scheme. He played his college ball at Clemson where he appeared in 54 games including starting every game from 2009-2011.
As for Brian Sanford, he is a 6'2 and 280lbs defensive lineman who had gone undrafted in 2010 out of Temple University. Brian was recently in the news as being involved in a trade with Seattle for OG John Moffit, but the trade was rescinded because Moffit failed his physical with the Browns. Apparently Cleveland could not find any other takers and they released him yesterday and the Raiders claimed him off waivers today. He has a total of 3 tackles in 5 games played so he does not have a lot of game experience, though he has been a member of the Browns active roster or practice squad since 2010.
The Raiders also have been actively pursuing players to sign to their practice squad. The latest players added to the PS are TE Brian Leonhardt and WR Greg Jenkins. Before that they had also added OG Lamar Mady to the practice team. They get 8 players altogether that they can add to the practice squad so they have 5 slots remaining. Unfortunately DE David Bass will not be one of those players added because he was claimed by the Chicago Bears.
This thread will be updated as player moves are made.
