I am a very passionate Raider fan, and a spoiled Raider fan. Al Davis spoiled me when Da Raiders really was the team of the decades. From the early 60s to early 90s, 4 decades, Da Raiders ruled. Then we had a down period & the hiring of Gruden led to a rebirth. Unfortunately Al wanted another Super Bowl before he died and he placed us in a dire situation. I still liked & respected Al up until the day he died. I also realized that one day a real GM would come in & clean up the mess that the great Al Davis screwed up.
Now we come to Reggie McKenzie and the mess he inherited--$20M in the hole his first year and $30M to $40M of dead money this year. And I look at my beloved Raiders today and I realize that Reggie Mc & Dennis Allen were dealt a bad hand and has struggled to right the ship. As a diehard fan I want them to turn the ship around yesterday, and not next year or the year after. But reality has set in. I like this Raider team. And yes, I hope we shock the world and finish the season 8-8 or better. But I realize the GM & Head Coach were dealt a shitty hand and they have made sugar out of shit. Yes, I, like everyone else wish we still had Philip Wheeler & Desmond Bryant. Hell, I know this is the unpopular choice, I still wished we had Carson Palmer. But the reality is these two men have put us in a position to succeed. Hopefully this year, but if not, in the foreseeable future--next year or within the next two years.
As passionate fans, we live in the here and now. And often times we can't see the forest for the trees. We get upset about draft choices that don't work out, and we place our disappointment on the GM who selected them or the head coach who recommended them. We don't look at the successes of three drafted rookies who will make an impact this year or at least get experience this year, or the undrafted free agents over the past two years who are making an impact. And next year I am dying to see what Reggie & Dennis do with $50M plus to get free agents & re-sign players like Veldheer, DMAC & Houston (assuming DMAC & Houston have great years).
Yes, I am still hoping like hell we have a very decent season this year. If not, I am hoping Mark Davis doesn't get rid of the GM & Head Coach who started in a hole and have done a great job digging out of that hole. And I know it may be a long season & doing the season, like other passionate fans, I will get pissed off and wished we had better players or played better or even had better coaching. But at the end of the day, I will still see light at the end of the tunnel. We will be back - if not this year - then next year. And if Reggie & DA are fired after this season and we have a GM & head coach who come in and are successful, I'm sure both will thank Reggie Mc & DA for leaving them a surplus of $50M plus to play with.
Now you can shoot the messenger, go ahead, I'm military strong, I can take it!
