The Raiders only had Khalif Barnes and newly acquired Tony Pashos on the active roster at Tackle due to injuries so it was a necessity to make at least one more roster move before their season opener tomorrow (Tomorrow!). The move has now been made by elevating practice squad OT Matt McCants to the active roster.
In order to promote McCants they placed LT Jared Veldheer on the Injured Reserve-Designated to Return list. This was an expected move but the Raiders had to wait until week 1 to make it official. By being designated to return Jared will be elegible to return after Week 8, which is a heck of a lot better than regular IR and being out all year. Nobody else on the Raiders will be given that option because the designation can only be used once.
Matt McCants played in 47 games with 42 starts, mostly at left tackle, over four seasons at Alabama Birmingham. He was a two-time All-Conference USA first-team selection (2010 & 2011) and was named the conference’s best offensive lineman his senior year. He was drafted in the 6th round of the 2012 draft by the New York Giants where he ended up being a practice squad player for most of the season.
Menelik Watson is going to be the starting Left Tackle while Veldheer is out if he can get out on the field. Unfortunately he tweaked his knee in practice and is out this game, which is what left the Raiders needing to activate McCants. Hopefully it doesn't turn out to be a serious injury because the Raiders need their second round pick on the field even more than they expected already.
