For what it's worth, this will be an ongoing series of what I think needs to happen, or what I think will happen. For what I think needs to happen, I will obviously put out who, what and when I see as the best moves that are available at the time; for what I think will happen, it will be what I see as the moves that the Raiders will make, although I may or may not agree with them. So, let's get started with this installment, center...
This is really the thinnest position on the offensive line, in that it has the least depth. Although Gurode is listed as a center, when Wisniewski was hurt, it was Brisiel that was moved over; Gurode was still used mostly as a guard, and unless or until we see him play center again, I'm going less with his listed position than where he actually played.
Wisniewski: I like Wisniewski, but he is not a mauler. He is a very good technician that is effective, but who struggles with jumbo defensive tackles. Because of this, I don't know that he will be moved to guard, but it is one of the reasons that I see a different type of guards in our future. It is also why I can see Brisiel moving to C; he is the same type of player that Wisniewski is, so that there is not as much of a transition should the backup have to come into the game. Wisniewski is very good with line calls and protections, but that was hard to see last year with all of the shuffling that took place on the line. It seems that his biggest issue is his shotgun snap; not that it was something that happened an awful lot, but it is something that will stand out when it does. I'm good with his play overall, and look forward to a season with a settled, improved line around him.
This is a position that needs better depth; using a starting guard as your backup center is not generally a good thing. I understand that last year's rash of injuries forced the team into carrying more tackles and guards, but I expect to see a guy brought in, just in case. I don't see a need to really concentrate on either the draft or free agency; a starter isn't necessary (in my view), so a guy with some skills that can be groomed can be found though either avenue.
