Now that the "Dead Money Era" is over. The Raiders have a full salary cap & seven draft picks to use to re-re-rebuild this team. Priority 1 (and 2 & 3 & 4) needs to be defense.
This defense blew leads to the Colts, Redskins, Giants, Titans, & Cowboys. It gave up ungodly numbers to Kansas City & Philadelphia. The offense scored 27 and lost to the Jets. That is 8 games, 8 games where the offense played good enough to win. If the defense plays halfway decent, you win 4 more of them. Now you're an 8-8 team. Still not a playoff contender, but in a position to add a piece or two and be back in contention quickly.
Yes, there was a revolving door at QB. Yes, the receiveing corps is young and mostly unproven. Yes, The Line needs help. But the offense played well enough despite all that to win you 8 games. Re-sign Jennings. Add some OL depth. But every major move this off-season needs to be on defense.
You chose to keep Dennis Allen & Jason Tarver. Both are young defensive minds. That is why they were hired. It is time to let them put together a unit that has the talent to execute their plans.
The offense needs improvement too. I agree. But the pieces are there more so than on defense. Remember, with all the turmoil the offense had, as bad as the line was, the offense played well enough to win you 8 games. Give McGloin a full off-season & camp to develop timing & trust with Streater, Moore & Rivera. They have the potential to become a solid passing attack.
This off-season needs to be all about the defense. 2015 can be all about the offense. We can't fix it all at once, but if you don't fix the defense, it won't matter how good the offense can be.
