So this is my first fan post to S&B, even though I have been a long time reader. Stuck at work for the next couple of hours waiting on the snowpacolypse to let up here in New England. I came across an article detailing the release and non-resigning of 4 players. A few of which I think the Raiders should give a serious look at, to provide depth if nothing else. Here are the four players, and reasons I think the Raiders should sign/check them out besides the fact Dennis Allen should be familiar with them.
1. Johnathan Vilma. ILB. Most people have heard of Vilma by now. He is 31 years old, but has missed 25 games in the past three seasons. Our linebacker corps is one of the stronger units of our Defense (I know that isn't saying a whole lot), so I would pass on this one.
2. Jabari Greer. CB. 2013 wasn't a great year for Greer. He had 30 tackles and 1 INT, whereas in 2012 he had 52 and 3. He is 32 yrs old, so he is on the downside of his career, but God knows we need help at CB and Dennis Allen would be somewhat familiar with him as he was there for the 2009 Super Bowl season. He has 12 INT on his career and returned 4 for a TD. He has mostly played in nickel and dime packages, but might provide us with some depth at the position which we could use.
3. Roman Harper. S. A pro bowler in 2009, Harper has talent in stopping the run. Defending receivers and TEs, ehhh not as great. He had 1 INT and 39 tackles in 2013. Again, Dennis Allen would of course be familiar with his play, and he might be able to contribute as a back up safety. He is only 30 yrs old, so he might be worth kicking the tires on.
4. Will Smith. DE. He is the most interesting of the bunch imo. He is coming off of an ACL injury that he had during preseason last year. As well all know, ACL injuries can slow down anyone, much less a 32 year old man that weighs over 250 lbs. His production has dropped off since the 2009 season when he had 13 sacks, but he has been consistent with 6 sacks each of the next three years. The last year he played, 2012, he recorded 6 sacks and 58 tackles. Depending on price, I think he would be a nice veteran addition to add at the DE position in our 4-3 defense.
Ok, thanks for reading, and I hope to contribute more, as I love the community here. Let me know what you guys think, and if you agree with me. If some of these guys could be had for a reasonable price, I think they could help our depleted Defense. I want some talented youth on our team, don't get me wrong, but I think we need some solid veteran presence on some units, and think some of these guys could still contribute. Stay warm, and just win baby.
