Recent reports have stated that teams are looking to move up to draft Sammy Watkins. Specifically the Lions. While some people think he wont last until the fifth pick, for the sake of argument, lets assume he will.
Detroit trading up to the fifth pick would most likely end up in a scenario as follows, OAK and DET swap first round picks, OAK gets DET 2nd round pick and OAK might have to throw in a later round pick. So, Oakland would end up with the 10th overall pick, the 36th overall pick, and the 45th overall pick. Who knows how exactly free agency pans out and who Oakland takes in the first round, but with the 36th and 45th overall picks, players like QB Derek Carr, OG David Yankey, DE Trent Murphy, may be on the board.
Chances are, one of the top QBs wont be around at the 10th pick, so maybe we snag Carr with the 36th, if he's available. Maybe we draft both Murphy and Yankey who are widely regarded as day 1 starters. Both players upgrade our lines, with the reports that McKenzie wants to build our team in the trenches, we could instantly have a top 10 line on either side of the ball.
The likelyhood of this happening is meek, I know. Still, a trade down would greatly benefit Oakland. Even if Watkins is drafted in the top 4 picks before he gets to Oakland, one of the following players will have to still be available, Clowney, Bortles, Bridgewater, Manziel, Robinson, Mathews. With more demand for OTs and QBs, than their are players available, this has Oakland being in a very good position to trade down and acquire an additional 2nd round pick.
