2014 NFL Draft: Raiders staff attends Blake Bortles, David Fales pro days

According to Mike Huguenin, Blake Bortles met with the Raiders coaching staff on Tuesday. Afterwards, the coaches stayed to watch Bortles perform in his pro day Wednesday. One of those coaches was offensive coordinator Greg Olson.

Bortles' pro day became much more significant after Teddy Bridgewater disappointed on Monday at his pro day. But unlike Bridgewater, Bortles impressed. Mike Mayock liked what he saw noting that it was "really solid from every perspective." Mayock went on to say that he showed "really good arm strength." But Mayock was not the only analyst impressed.

Houston Texans Head Coach Bill O' Brien told the Houston Chronicle's John McClain that "it was a good workout. He made all the throws, shows good footwork. I was impressed." With the Texans looking to trade Matt Schaub, Bortles is a candidate to become the number one overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Former quarterback Ron Jaworski gave Bortles extremely high praise stating that "On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give him a ten today. He was well-prepared and made every throw."

Even Bortles was pleased with his performance: "I thought it was good; I thought it went well."

Ultimately, the only opinion that matters is Reggie McKenzie's. But, the Raiders general manager was not on hand to watch Bortles, instead he was in San Jose to grade David Fales.

While taking a Quarterback early is certainly an option for the Raiders, drafting a different need (pass rusher, wide receiver, offensive guard) in the first couple rounds and then taking a quarterback later might also be in play. According to Jimmy Durkin, Reggie McKenzie was in San Jose to watch David Fales at his pro day.

Fales displayed tremendous accuracy as he only missed on one of 53 throws. Posting a 72.5 completion percentage in 2012, Fales is one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the draft. But lack of arm strength has him projected as a day 3 pick.

The Raiders quarterback coach John DeFilippo recruited Fales to San Jose State. McKenzie told the Contra Costa Times' Jerry McDonald "He definitely knows the guy very well,"

Both Blake Bortles and David Fales impressed Wednesday, and the Raiders staff was on hand to witness it.
