There has been a lot of talk about Raiders newly acquired RB Maurice Jones-Drew's bold statement, saying also newly acquired QB Matt Schaub can "Definitely lead Oakland to a Superbowl." Superbowl? Not so sure. Playoffs? Why not?
Just before the year began last season, the Texans were considered a super bowl contender. In my opinion, keep in mind there's also still the draft, the Raiders have built a better team for 2014 than the Texans had in 2013 or even 2012 when they won the AFC South with the record of 12-4. If the Raiders want Schaub to resurrect his career, he's going to need a legitimate weapon on his WR core. Desean Jackson was snagged by the Redskins, and rumor has it Browns are looking to snag Sammy Watkins with the 4th pick overall. If that happens, Raiders should go for Texas A&M WR Mike Evans, who had 69 receptions in 2013 to go with 1,394 receiving yards and 12 TD's. However, if Watkins is available when the Raiders pick at #5, they definitely should draft him without a question.
Earlier this week Watkins said he has "Freakish talents" And boy was he right. He's a smaller receiver standing at 6'1 and weighing 205 pounds, however his dynamic catching abilities and lightning speed make up greatly for his size. Watkins recorded 101 receptions, 1,464 receiving yards, and 12 TD's in 2013 for Clemson. If they were to get one of those receivers, they would have quite the WR core with Watkins (Or Evans), James Jones, Rod Streater, and Denarius Moore. Don't forget in the backfield you have a dangerous combo in Maurice Jones-Drew and Darren McFadden. There's also 2 time pro bowl FB Marcel Reece. If they can work out some kinks in training camp, get a good rhythm going along with some chemistry and their revamped defense, the Raiders could easily be a dangerous sleeper team to watch for in 2014. On paper they look solid and like I said, there's also still the draft. Do you think the Raiders can make the playoffs in 2014? Please vote in the poll, and thanks for reading!
