The Oakland Raiders love guys that have chips on their shoulders and UDFA Karl Williams fits that mold perfectly. The 6ft, 243lbs UDFA fullback out of Utah had to fight to get onto the Utah Utes in college and now he will have to fight to get onto the Raiders after not having been drafted in the 2014 NFL Draft.
"Coming to Utah as a walk-on, I like to have to work for what I get," he said to Kyle Goon of the Salt Lake Tribune. "I wanted to go somewhere that fit me and wanted me. I think it worked out for the best."
The Raiders are already quite set at the FB position with Marcel Reece, but that doesn't mean that Karl Williams can't fight and make the team. Marcel is anything but your normal FB in the NFL so there could be a place for a 2nd FB if he proves to be a more than capable of blocker. At 6ft tall he is a little short to switch to TE but that is also an area that Oakland is looking to improve on.
Williams doesn't have many stats on his side for in college but he had two games in particular where he stood out. In the 2013 season opener he had 12 carries for 45 yards with a TD, and then in the Utes upset win against Stanford he had 5 receptions for 20 yards and a TD. That might not seem like that much but it is when you consider in his career he only had 22 carries in his career for 88 yards and a TD along with 19 receptions for 115 yards and 3 receiving TD's.
Whether he ends up making the Raiders or not, Karl is still looking at this shot with the team as a blessing. He wasn't given a spot on the Utah football squad but he walked on and took a spot anyway. Now he wasn't drafted but he is being given his shot to walk-on to the Oakland Raiders. We will see what he does with it.
