The Raiders preparation for the season opener officially began today. This is when the status of players really matters. Later today we will have our first official injury report but until then, there's the eye test. And that puts Nick Roach's status very much in doubt.
Roach was not practicing yet again today according to media on hand at practice. He is still recovering from a concussion he suffered in the team's third preseason game some 11 days ago. He must pass the concussion protocol to return to practice as well as play in the game. Sometimes this happens quickly, other times it can take a while.
Rookie defensive tackle Justin Ellis was out nearly two weeks recovering from his concussion. Every day that goes by he is not on the practice field, the less likely it is that he will start the opener.
Returning to the field was Taiwan Jones from the knee strain that kept him out all of the preseason. This return is right on time with what Dennis Allen had said he hoped. In Jones' absence, second year running back Latavius Murray has been the team's primary kick returner. It will be interesting to see if/when Jones gets that job back.
Still not practicing was Chimdi Chekwa as he recovers from his own knee injury.
David Ausberry was back on the practice field Monday but he was limited. He was still practicing and we will find out soon whether he was able to do more. He had a procedure done on his knee during training camp.
