Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Oakland Raiders News 10-09-07:I Don't Want To Wake Up!!!

Besides the fact that everyone I've spoken to today had a hard time waking up, I guess it's just one of those days, I find myself in the middle of a DREAM beginning for our beloved Silver and Black, Oakland Raiders, and I do not want to wake up.

MMMMM...Super Bowl Trophy

Sure, that wake-up call can happen this Sunday, when we play the HATED San Diego Chargers.

The Chargers seemed to wake up out of a 5 week slumber against the Broncos last week, when they pulverized them into oblivion, 41-3.

Re-Cap

Box Score

Their season was on the line and they responded with a dominating game on the "roid", I mean road.

It even looks like some of the columnists and fans that wanted Norv Turner Fired have called off the dogs for now.

For all of you out of towners, Here is the map for the TV schedule for the US. (They should have it sorted out by Wednesday)

One thing that I know we have to contend with is their newfound play calling:

After running the ball 27, 19, 26 and 21 times (Despite the fact that they have the BEST running back tandem in the NFL), they ran the ball 31 times for 214 yards against Denver's last place run defense.

Don't look now Raider fans, BUT, the Silver and Black are the Worst in the NFL at Average Yards per Rush.

The bottom line is that we HAVE to stop the run. Period.

A 4-2 start would ensure that as we head into the toughest part of our schedule, San Diego's has already passed, we will be in first place in the AFC West and will have regained some level of respectability.

Apparently Russell is impressing in
practice.  The future is indeed bright.

Tim, N.E.P.A.: Whats going on with JaMarcus Russel? Will he get some play time soon? Thanks.

Chris Mortensen: (11:23 AM ET ) I think the Raiders will hold off on Russell until they determine their playoff chances. They might be in this thing so it would make sense to go with a veteran like Culpepper or McCown. Russell has been very impressive since he signed, I can tell you that.

I can't wait fo the game on Sunday
The Raiders usually get a lot of fans in SD when they play.  I am concerned about the defense this year, they don't seem to be very good on pass defense, hopefully Burgess' return will pick up the pass rush.  As I knew all along Fabian is not a very good corner, I am not a big fan of Routt either but at least he is getting close to the defender.  I think Huff has been the biggest disappointment, he is largely invisible during the game, was a 7th pick wasted?  My fears were squashed on Monday when Kiffin named Culpepper the starter, we will need a passing game this week I am sure.  I just don't believe the Raiders will be as successful running as they have been against lesser foes.  Now we will see how good Culpepper is since he will be forced to throw the ball.   I assume Fargas will start with Rhodes backing him up, haven't heard anything about Jordan so assume he will not play.

Fear and loathing in SD
The annual seige on San Diego commences this friday eve with approximately 10,000 parolees and other assorted characters from Mad Max films desending on Qualcom from the greater Watts area.  It is widely accepted in San Diego that you do not bring your wife or kids to the Raider game and you better keep your your head on a swivel at the game as steel shanks and profanity laced slurring are the norm.

I call that the road field advantage.

The horrible call last year in SD
Remember the play last year in the Raider game at SD in the fourth quarter where the receiver caught a ball and fell down without contact (he thought he had been knocked down) he got up and spiked the ball.  Fumble, right?  Huff fell on it, Raider ball, right?  The play was reviewed and the call on the field as a fumble was reversed because the spike was determined to be a forward pass.

My head exploded.

Visions of the New England Tucking shot through my mind.  How in God's name was that an attempted pass!  Now I am no football guru like Mel kiper or Kewshawn, but I am not used to a receiver catching the ball, falling down, getting up thinking, You know what it is time to pass.

I have never beleived in all of that conspiracy BS about the league being after the Raiders, but that was the closest I have come to thinking the ghost of Pete Rozelle is still trying to rheem Uncle Al.

Isn't it strange that most of the
rule changes emanate from a Raider play, usually one that screws the Raiders.  However, one thing clearly noticeable about this years team so far is lack of dumb penalties.  Not even one play is really in dispute so far this year other than the Shanahan timeout which cost us a game, but the following week the Raiders won doing the same thing.  I think that rule will be changed next year though.  I really like the fact the Raiders under Kiffin have cleaned up their play.  Now if their defense would only step up and play a good game we might have a chance.
