Kiffin says he's not on outs with Davis, Raiders

Finally, some unbiased reporting about the Kiffin situation. I hope, finally, that this puts to rest all the the BS with that story. Now we can really go forward.

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- After a few warmup questions, Lane Kiffin was asked to describe working for Al Davis. The Oakland Raiders coach paused.

"I need a sip of water," he said, chuckling.

Kiffin has widely been reported as being on the outs with the Raiders' longtime owner and uninvolved in the many personnel decisions the team made this offseason. But the way Kiffin explained those moves Tuesday, from the re-signing of running back Justin Fargas to the additions of free agents Javon Walker, John Wade and Gibril Wilson and the trade for cornerback DeAngelo Hall, it seemed clear the coach was a major part of the transactions.

"It's very unique," Kiffin said of coaching for Davis. "He's an owner who is very hands-on, prides himself on his knowledge of football.

"It's not the easiest job. I know people have left because of that. Al is very demanding. At the same time, he is someone who has done a lot of things in this league -- coach, [AFL] commissioner, owner -- and has a lot of knowledge."

Only when discussing the retention of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan did Kiffin emphasize Davis' decision-making role.

"At the end of the season, Rob and I had a meeting and Rob felt it was in his best interest to go somewhere else," Kiffin said. "I met with the owner and expressed that with Al, we talked about a lot of things and a lot of different scenarios that could come up, and Al decided to stay with Rob. Rob has one year left on his contract.

"I've always had a strong and very good relationship with Rob."

And his relationship with the only person who really counts on the Raiders? That can only improve if Oakland's record gets better.

"Nobody was happy with 4-12, but it was a very valuable year for me and our staff to learn more about the team and see what we had," Kiffin said. "All that information helps for the future"

Very interesting
I read the article, frankly I am elated.  It sounds very much like Kiffin will be here this year, good to see him giving a little talk.  It appears that Ryan wanted to take the Jets job but Al nixed it.  It also appears that this might be Ryan's last year here if he in fact wanted to go somewhere else.
Now that Kiff has given a news conference I expect to hear a lot more about him in the future.  I always enjoyed his banter, and his fire.  I liked the fact that he mentioned that no one was happy with a 4 win season.  Also that he was involved in all the off season transactions to some extent or other.  Now, let's get down to getting ready for this season, it has been a long off season.  Expect to read in the next few days all the sportswriters explaining to us that Kiffin lied all through this conference, and to not believe anything we just read.

He has also stated that the Raiders probably
wont take McFadden.
No go on McFadden? Because of a surplus of running backs, including the newly re-signed Justin Fargas, Kiffin said the team likely won't pursue Arkansas star running back Darren McFadden with the No. 4 pick. Kiffin said the team's biggest need is at the defensive line, where Virginia defensive end Chris Long (the son of Raiders Hall of Famer Howie Long) and defensive tackles Glenn Dorsey of LSU and Sedrick Ellis of USC are possibilities.
"[McFadden] is a phenomenal player .... But we really don't have a big need at running back," Kiffin said.

I'm Loving It!!
I knew the Raiders will not go with a runningback no matter how good Mcfadden is. Another D-line sounds bad, boring and stupied, but remember, a D-Line can change a game in an instance. Also, hearing Kiffin talk repectably to Mr.Davis is great. I think we have a coach who fits into our system perfectly. Hardworking, smart, respectful, and stand up for his players. I also loved hearing he had some say in the transaction of 2008. Great Article The Raider Way and blackpearl.

I'm just happy
I'm just happy that Lane's getting along with the tyrant Al Davis. Though I don't know how anyone could.

Lane is playing the game, and playing it well. He
knows Al is in charge, and if he can bring success, he will be the  most sought after coach in the NFL.
Kiffin said he had input in the team's offseason acquisitions this year and that he hopes to have the same input during the draft, but he was clear that Davis is the "general manager" of the team. Kiffin said if the moves Oakland made don't work, the hammer will likely fall on the coach.

"I don't worry about it," Kiffin said.

Kiffin has a likable way about him. He is truthful. He doesn't shy away from the fact that he is in a tough spot. But you get the sense that he relishes the chance; you get the feeling that he wants to be the one who makes it work in Oakland. He wants to turn around the program that has won a league-low 19 games in the past five seasons.

Perhaps that is why he's confident to say that things aren't always rosy in Oakland; why he believes he can be a rare survivor in Davis' universe.

Kiffin, who freely admitted he and Davis don't see "eye-to-eye," was asked if Davis listens to him. "He listens to me," Kiffin said. "I don't know what he does with it, but he listens to me."

And after a rocky first quarter of 2008, the Davis and Kiffin marriage continues. Somehow.

This is a great article.......
About McFadden....

What, you all think the Raiders would come out and admit their draft strategy?  No, no my friends!  The reality here is the Raiders want to keep leverage in Pre Draft contract negotiations with possible draft picks.  If McFadden and his agent know that the Raiders are crazy about McFadden, then they have all the leverage.

Instead the Raiders can say, "take this contract at #4, or slip a few picks down the board and make a ton less money!"

Don't you all remember how much love Kiff and the Raiders gave Brady Quinn before the draft last year?  Its all about misdirection, and leverage, and Kiff is not about to tell the world the Raiders real plans.  The reality hear is still obvious to me.

WTF
Oakfosho you realize we draft them 1st. Then we talk about a contract with them after that not during the draft. So as far as him slipping a FEW more picks or accept our quick contract, not so much. So we gain 0 leverage. Hell even using the misdrirection you speak of if we spent so much time on Brady Quinn as you say. How much did that drop Jamarcus's contract with us?

The only time I've ever seen a team have talks about a contract pre-draft was when you have the 1st overall pick Reggie Bush and then signing Mario Williams predraft.

I agree with your misdirection idea. Because regardless of what Kiff says, Al has the last say on what Al wants. The idea that it gives us leverage in any way is ridiculous. To get into those talks. We'd of already drafted him. And if he wanted to hold out by then. WE'd then have leverage as we have a solid rotation. So if he wanted to sit out so be it until his price dropped. That or trade him.

He is a top 5 talent. He simply isn't going to have his agent take a discount because he fears dropping 3 spots. His agent will get him an extremly lucrative contract being the 1st RB off the board and on top of that skilled positions GET PAID.

by lockdown851 on Apr 1, 2008 2:37 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ummm....
Contract negotiations happen all the time before the draft.  You even talked about Mario being taken over Bush cause he agreed before hand on a contract.  Preliminary negotiations happen all the time, even if you don't hear about it.

I used Brady Quin as an example of misdirection, not contract negotiations.

The difference in Money between the 4th pick and the 6th or later is measured in MILLIONS, and that gives the Raiders leverage, especially because he may not even go at #6, and then the difference is even bigger.

What Kiffin said about McFadden
is true, why put a spin on it? The one thing I have liked about Kiffin is his honesty.  It is true when you said that Brady Quinn was hyped last year by Kiffin.  Rumor has it he wanted Quinn but Al wanted JaMarcus, that I believe is true.  Quinn seems more like a Kiffin QB, JaMarcus is an Al QB.  In this draft Kiffin might want a defensive lineman, and Al might want McFadden, guess who we will draft?
I can't remember a single thing Kiffin said that I looked back later and thought he had lied.  You have to remember that this is Al's team and Al will always win out in a pissing match.
I am just happy that Kiffin has emerged from hiding,  I think he knows he will be coaching the Raiders this year and for two more if Al wants him.  Remember, Al has 2 option years on Kiffin.  I doubt he will exercise though.

When you are drafting at #4
there are no reasons to play games.  The Raiders know there will be two or three over hyped players left when they draft.  Anything they say has no effect on the teams in front of them, nor the teams behind them.

You are obviously confused......
How many drafts have you watched/researched, cause deception is ALWAYS key to a teams strategy.  This deception also has a huge effect on the teams above and especially below the Raiders.  This is obvious!

In fact, to prove my point,
Check out this post about the Lions from PFT....

LIONS CALLED OUT FOR ANNOUNCING VISITS: Posted by Mike Florio on April 1, 2008, 10:45 p.m.

"In response to the recent announcement by Lions coach Rod Marinelli of the names of ten of the players who'll be visiting team headquarters prior to the draft, a league source with extensive experience preparing for and conducting drafts has shared the following opinion with us:

"Clearly, he's an idiot."

Though the media often pieces together, based on discussions with players and/or agents, the names of guys who make visits to individual teams, it's rare that teams blare that information to the world.

The fact that Marinelli did so in conjunction with a media discussion in which also he declared the team's needs for the 2008 draft is almost unheard of in the cloak-and-dagger world of the NFL draft.

"He and Matt [Millen] are made for each other," the source said.

Then again, it's possible that it's all a ruse, and that the Lions are bringing in the guys whom Marinelli said they're bringing in in order to distract the rest of the league as to the guys in whom they're truly interested.

But these are the Lions.  The team that has burned four top-ten picks on wideouts since 2002.  They're not playin' dumb; they're plain dumb."

So you can see, Lane would be retarded to actually give up the Raiders draft strategy.  He is just blowing hot air up reporters asses, just like Reporters fucked him all off-season.  Therefore.....

Kiffin Reinforces My Thoughts
Of any over-riding issue that highlights last year's weakness, it was the D-line. Let's hope Davis doesn't do something stupid and draft in an area of perceived strength.

by PrideandNoise on Apr 2, 2008 12:08 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Biggest Area of need....
is SCORING TDs!  The Raiders have a rediculous amount of money invested in the D-Line already, and if Al invests more, then mad fools are getting cut, anbd guaranteed money is going strait down the drain for years to come concidering the contracts of Warren, Kelly, and Sands.  Financially, D-Lane is not the correct pick at #4.

What Good is it to score...
...if you can't stop the opposition!

Just please take a look at what this team has added offensively this off-season. We've addressed the WR posiition, solidified the RB position as well as the O-line...Just waiting for Newberry to return. Adding a RB to a team that doesn't lack at the position will not necessarily equate with a significantly higher number of scores.

The glaring weakness remains the D-line and has been the case for several years now. I refuse to keep my head buried in the sand and ignore the obvious. As Raider fans, we have a lot to be excited about for next year, but we also haveto be realistic about short and long-term goals.

John Wade.....
appears to have taken Newberry's spot.  I too hold out hope that he will return and fight for a starting spot.

By the way, the Raiders have attempted to address the D-Line though more help is coming in the draft.  Whether its at #4 or not, we will see.

He has predicted the Raiders will get McFadden.
If the Raiders are waiting for later rounds to draft D-linemen I am a a bit surprised as I haven't heard much about great depth at those positions for this draft.

I agree with OakFoSho
The D-line has too much money invested in it. It's should manage to hold up just fine this season, besides we need a franchise back. Sure we have four good ones, but none you want to be the cornerstone of a franchise. McFadden would fit the bill and I'm still ecstatic at the chance to snag him.

No matter what the Raiders
say before the draft, Miami, St. Louis and Atlanta are going to draft the player they want and need.
The fact the Raiders say they want a D lineman has no effect on those three teams.  If the Raiders said they want McFadden, or Gholston it would still make no difference to those teams.  What Miami does does make a difference.  Last year if the Raiders had drafted Calvin or Quinn, that would have changed the draft dramatically.  None of those 3 teams care a whit what Oakland wants, they will draft to their needs.  By the way, the Raiders just signed a free agent center, I wonder if that means that Newberry is gone.  Kiffin mentioned that he liked the center in his little talk, so possibly Newberry will not be back, interesting.

Negotations
Sorry been without computer for a bit. 1st you are right the example of the Texans talking about a deal was ABSOLUTLY right because they had in fact the 1st overall pick. They had no one picking ahead of them that could of screwed up their pick. We in fact have 3 people ahead of us. No point in talking with someone who could possibly not be there.

I don't disagree with your idea that people use tatics and lies to get the player they want. Every year you hear about things from teams injuries, character issues, ect. The draft is much like cards no one wants to give up their hand.

My point was simply pretending we don't want darren wont make his contract any less expensive.

by lockdown851 on Apr 4, 2008 2:34 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Again,
this statement is incorrect.  Leverage is always used befor the draft in pre contract negotiations, even if you don't hear about it.  believe what you will but there are many examples of this fact playing itself out in the past.

Al is anything but logical
One could argue both ways that the D-line has a lot of cash invested into it as they could argue how much depth and cash we have invested at RB. Bush, Jordan, Rhoades, Fargas anyone?

When Al traded for Hall it showed he had no problem in overstacking at a position. Was CB our deepest need on defense? No it was stopping the run. Aside from Schwagart fucking up everything. Our CB's were one of our few bright sides on D. The one big problem I've seen for years and years is how teams just RUN on us and continue to keep doing so.

Right now we are looking at a WANT vs a NEED. We need to stop the run. But people WANT Mcfadden. On scoring touchdowns it isn't like our Passing game has been doing the job the last few years finishing near the end of the league. With J.R. and our new WR increased TD's will help our running game. Also with Zach with another year under his belt. It will help balance our team which had a lot of close games last year. Especially with our running game having a breakout season last year under cables system.

Putting Mcfadden behind our line would be nice to watch gain yardage but... watching our division rivals TOP BACKS like Larry Johnson, Ladanian Tomlinson, and hell Travis Henry as well pick a dirty d-line and just CHURN out a 1,000 yard back. We need to beat our division 1st. Then move on to the rest of the league until we can do that no point in putting points on people when they will just do the same thing to beat us and win the game.

Check the Salary comparasons......
Kelly's contract alone accounts for all the salary of all the RBS on the roster put together.

Trading for hall is not overstacking the CB possition especially if Fabian is traded as everyone expects.

As far as wnats and needs, Kelly Warren Sands Joseph (and Grady if they bring him in like everyone is talking about) easily fill the need at both DT possitions.

The only argument that can be made for need on the O-Line is DE, and C. Long will be gone and Gholston is overrated at #4.

Also, McFadden fills the raiders BIGGEST NEED that you fail to recognize: TDS!!  He can take it to the house on each and every play that the Raiders have the ball on offense and ST.  Also he will play just as much if not more Slot WR as we have some decent backs.  The idea is to get him the ball in any way possible.

The Raiders biggest need is TDs!!  Thus....

Al's Mandate is McFadden!!

Also.....
The argument in favor of taking a DE in the first round took a huge hit when Kalimba Edwards was signed to a two year contract with guaranteed $$$$.  Face it, Al has attempted to address all need in Free Agency (with the minor exception of SLB) so that he can take the fastest, most explosive, most versatile player in the draft.....
