Just a week after the Raiders were embarrassed at home by giving up 251 yards rushing and four touchdowns to Doug Martin, they were embarrassed on the road by having 55 points hung on them. The two games combined, the Raiders have given up 97 points in two games-the most they have given up in a two game stretch since their second year of existence (1961).
It was a beatdown in every facet of the game for the Ravens in this game. They scored points off turnovers, they scored points on long drives, and they scored points on special teams. The result was a runaway laugher the likes of which the Raiders have not experienced in thirty years.
The Raiders first drive attempt ended when they went for it on fourth and one and Mike Brisiel stepped on Carson Palmer's foot to give up the sack and turn the ball over on downs. That's how things went for the Raiders offense for much of the day.
While the Raiders offense was going nowhere, the defense was escorting the Ravens for scores. The Ravens didn't punt one time in the first half. Their drives all ended like this: Field goal, Touchdown, Touchdown, Field goal, Interception, and Touchdown.
The one time the Raiders were able to stop the Ravens from driving for a score was when Michael Huff intercepted the ball at the Ravens' 20 yard line. But the Raiders were unable to capitalize on the great field position and settled for a field goal.
The Raiders did keep their streak of scoring in the final two minutes alive. Palmer connected with Darrius Heyward-Bey who broke a tackle and ran for a 60-yard touchdown. The celebration wouldn't last long, however, as the defense immediately gave up a long drive to the Ravens who scored a touchdown when Ray Rice walked into the endzone untouched from eight yards out.
The second half started as the first half ended-with a quick Ravens touchdown. It is also the way the Raiders have played defense in the third quarter all season. The Raiders were able to answer with a touchdown of their own and then the defense forced a punt for the first time on the day. But just when it looked like the Raiders may make a game of it, Phillip Adams muffed the punt and gave it right back to the Ravens. The Ravens got the ball on the Raiders' 20 yard line and scored on one play.
The Ravens would score again before the third quarter was over for a total of three third quarter touchdowns. I don't know what the Raiders are doing in the locker room at halftime but it isn't working. In fact, it appears to be having the opposite effect. The fourth quarter hadn't begun and the game was already affectively over at 48-17.
But just for good measure, the Ravens would return a kickoff 105 yards for a touchdown to send it out in a laugher. Carson Palmer's final drive ended much the same as his first drive. This time he simply fumbled the snap. The final score was a ridiculous 55-20.
The terrible defense by the Raiders was the story of the day but the story on offense was balls tipped at the line. Carson Palmer saw six of his pass attempts get tipped at the line. One of those tips resulted in an interception and the Ravens scored on a field goal off the turnover.
The only player who was returning from injury that actually played significant minutes was cornerback Ron Bartell. Aaron Curry returned for his first game since coming off the PUP list but he only saw action on special teams. His contribution was two personal foul calls. Khalif Barnes was back at practice this week but was inactive.
Taiwan Jones was talked about as the new starter at running back with Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson both out, but not only did he not start, he didn't receive a single carry until midway through the third quarter. He had a total of three touches on the day (2 runs, 1 catch) for 13 yards.
The 55 points scored by the Ravens was most in franchise history. It ties a franchise record for the Raiders which was set in 1981 against Dan Fouts and the Chargers.
