Goethel was the Raiders primary backup middle linebacker. Now it is uncertain who the team will turn to should Rolando McClain need to be replaced in the lineup. It could mean Aaron Curry stepping into that role or perhaps Philip Wheeler or Miles Burris shifting over with Curry coming in at the weakside linebacker spot. That is, of course, only if McClain were to go out.

The third year linebacker has never finished a season since joining the NFL as the Raiders' round six pick in the 2010 draft. His rookie season, he appeared in eight games before being lost for the season. Last year, he was lost for the season in training camp.

Goethel's most notable play this season came in the opener when he was thrust into emergency long snapper duties. The team had not properly prepared him to take over the job and when Jon Condo left the game with a concussion, Goethel had a crash course in those duties. The result was disastrous and the Raides would lose to the Chargers in what appeared as if it might have been an otherwise competitive game.

Typically, his jobs are in blocking and coverage on kick and punt returns. He does quite well in those duties. No word yet on the team signing someone to fill his roster spot.
