The reason that head coach Romeo Crennel has given for the release is that their "relationship was not progressing".
Surprising and interesting are not really superlative enough to describe this move. Routt played in only 8 games for the Chiefs after signing a $19.6 million dollar contract with a $4 million dollar signing bonus this off-season. Routt did have 2 interceptions on the season but that wasn't enough to save his job even though he was one of their starting corners.
I have to doubt that this move had much to do with Routt's performance on the field. This move reeks of conduct detrimental to the team and seems more personal than most personnel moves. Routt showed the Raiders he was not interested in being a team player when he refused to rework his "out of whack" contract, perhaps that attitude carried over to his next job in Kansas City.
Defensive Tackle Shaun Smith will take the open roster spot for the Chiefs while Routt hits the Waiver Wire. If Routt is not claimed on waivers the Chiefs will be on the hook for the rest of the $1.8 million base salary.
Some team out there will give Routt another opportunity. He has been cut from two teams this year already but he does have talent. That talent will make some team jump at the chance to get him.
Who knows maybe that team will even be Oakland? The Raiders could use another corner more than just about anybody but I would still be surprised to see Routt return to Oakland.
