Tragedy in Kansas City transcends rivalry

New, comments

There is a time to put petty differences away and realize that we are all part of one large family. Now is that time.

Handout

I woke this morning, like many of you, in stunned disbelief about the news that Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher had taken his own life following the murder of his girlfriend this morning in Kansas City.

The first shooting was reported about 8 a.m. at a home near 54th Street and Chrysler Avenue. The second shooting was reported a short time later at a Chiefs practice facility located on the Arrowhead facility.

Officials said the Chiefs player shot and killed his girlfriend and then drove to the practice facility where he shot and killed himself.

A lot of details are still being uncovered but one thing is for certain, there are no NFL uniforms which matter here. This incident affects us all. Belcher was a father and a son. He was also a teammate and part of the NFL family. The family of which we all are akin. And when a family member is lost, we all feel it.

Please have the families involved here in your thoughts as well as Belcher's Chiefs teammates and coaches who spent the better part of the past four seasons with him.
