Carson Palmer injury update: Raiders QB out vs. Chargers with cracked ribs

New, comments

Carson Palmer will miss Oakland's season finale after suffering cracked ribs against the Panthers.

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

The Oakland Raiders will be without starting quarterback Carson Palmer on Sunday as Palmer will miss the season finale due to cracked ribs and a bruised lung.

Palmer suffered the injuries during the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers. He took a shot from Panthers defensive end Greg Hard and was forced to leave the game. Initial X-rays came back negative, but a CT scan revealed the damage. With Palmer out, Matt Leinart will start against San Diego while second-year quarterbackTerrelle Pryor will also be worked into the game in certain situations.

Palmer started all 15 games for the Raiders this season, throwing for 4,018 yards and 22 touchdowns. While he is still under contract for next season, his future with the team could come into question. Palmer is set to earn a base salary of $13 million next season, but the Raiders could decide that is too much money and either release him or attempt to renegotiate his contract again.

Sunday's game will be just the third game Leinart has started since 2007.
