NFL teams scramble as franchise tag deadline approaches

New, comments

As my mom always said "If it weren't for the last minute, nothing would get done." That is how the NFL functions with just about everything. If there is a deadline, you can bet they will run right up against it before the final decisions are made. The franchise tag deadline is no different. It occurs at 1pm PST today and the franchised players are still trickling in.

The first team to get down to it and tag their player was the Philadelphia Eagles who tagged WR DeSean Jackson. Shortly after that, the Raiders jumped into action and tagged S Tyvon Branch. In the last couple days the other NFL teams have gotten into the act. Here is the list:

Cardinals DE Calais Campbell, Falcons CB Brent Grimes, Ravens RB Ray Rice, Bears RB Matt Forte, Bengals K Mike Nugent, Browns K Phil Dawson, Cowboys DE Anthony Spencer, Broncos K Matt Prater, Lions DE Cliff Avril, Colts DE Robert Mathis, Jaguars K Josh Scobee, Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe, Patriots WR Wes Welker, Saints QB Drew Brees, Giants P Steve Weatherford, 49ers S Dashon Goldson, Titans S Michael Griffin, and Redskins TE Fred Davis.

In the waning hours until the deadline, several other teams are expected to announce their franchise tags as well. I will keep you updated as they come down the pipe.
