Raider GM Reggie McKenzie has said he would like to add a tight end to the mix to compete with Brandon Myers, David Ausberry, and Richard Gordon. Well, the Raiders, as well as some other teams took a serious look at a guy named Les Brown at tight end in this year's draft. He turned some heads at the BYU pro day in front of Raider scouts among others.
He has the size at 6-4, 238 pounds. Then he had scouts doing a double take at their stopwatches when he ran a 4.43, 40-yard dash...on a sprained ankle. And with that kind of speed, it also no wonder he had a 39 inch vertical jump and a 10-3 broad jump. He also did well in position drills, showing good hands catching the ball.
And before you think this is just some workout warrior, Brown is a former NAIA Academic All-American. There is one catch though; he has never played a down of college football. In fact, he doesn't even play for BYU.
He is a basketball player for local Westminster College. Scouts project him as a tight end. After his performance in physical as well as position drills, he interviewed privately with several teams, one of whom was the Raiders according to sources.
If he is drafted, it could be in the lower rounds or perhaps as an undrafted free agent. Reggie McKenzie has said he loves his undrafted free agents so if the Raiders pass on him in the draft, or if Brown is ruled ineligible, he could get a call shortly after the draft is over from a team looking for the next Antonio Gates or Jimmy Graham.
