Giants free agent defensive end Dave Tollefson is visiting the Raiders today according to various sources. He has been a member of two Super Bowl teams in New York. But the Raiders had their hands on him first and let him go. Well, technically the Packers had their hands on him very first as they drafted him in the seventh round in 2006 out of Northwest Missouri State.
Tollefson is from nearby Walnut Creek and attended Ygnacio Valley High School and Los Medanos College before heading to NMSU. This would be his second stint in Raiders camp. He was signed off the Packers practice squad in 2007 but didn't make the Raiders roster. He has played for the Giants for the past five seasons.
For the Giants, he has not been extremely productive. He has played in a lot of games as a reserve defensive end but hadn't started a game until last season when he started two. He had his best season in 2011 with 5.0 sacks and 19 tackles playing in all 16 games with two starts, helping the Giants into the playoffs and go on to win their second Super Bowl during his time with the team.
Word is the Raiders are looking at him to play linebacker primarily though he is a defensive end by trade. Tollefson played tight end in college as well so he is no stranger to coverage and route running.
There are other teams interested in Tollefson. The Packers have reported interest and he is scheduled to visit the Titans following the Raiders. But if the Raiders want him, they have the inside track to sign him as Tollefson would welcome a trip back home to the Bay Area.
UPDATE: Per Bay Area News Group, Tollefson left Alameda without a contract and is still scheduled to make his visit with the Titans on Thursday. He will weigh his options and make his decision at that time.
