The attorney for Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey was in court Thursday on behalf of his client who was arrested for driving under the influence last month along the Bay Bridge between Oakland and San Francisco. His lawyer entered a plea of not guilty.
The original report according to CHP spokesman Tony Ham; the 25 year old Heyward-Bey was driving his 2012 Range Rover on the lower deck about 2 a.m. April 7 when an officer spotted him speeding and weaving in his lane. He was pulled over and given a field sobriety test, which he allegedly failed. He was cited for suspicion of drunken driving and later released.
He was said to have blown a 0.12 on the breathalyzer. The legal limit is 0.08.
Raiders head coach Dennis Allen had this to say about the case against his young receiver:
"It's a situation that we're aware of and we're monitoring. We'll see how the whole legal proceedings carry out and then we'll kind of go from there... Until we get all the facts of the case, we're not going to rush to judgment on anything. Get all the facts and then play it out from there."
This is what DHB had to say on his behalf to media in attendance at OTA's following the incident:
"I just kind of regret bringing bad attention to the team, for the most par. Want to let the fans know that I'm here, working hard, trying to get on the same page with Carson and looking forward to the season."
The charge is a misdemeanor and DHB will be due in court again on June 28. If convicted, he could serve up to 6 months in jail. If he is suspended by the league, it would be no more than one game as it is his first offense.
