Week 8 NFL game picks: Steelers vs Raiders tougher than it looks

New, comments

The Silver & Black Pride staff picks the week 8 winners.

Al Bello

Week eight of the 2013 season is upon us. Last week the Raiders had their bye week so none of us had to worry about whether to pick them to win or to incur the wrath of those who believe we should always pick them to win. The fear of that backlash keeps me awake at night.

There was a three-way tie for the top spot in the staff rankings last week but after the week 7 pick results, that tie is down to two. Marcus and myself tied at 9-6 to hold the top spot while SOB fell from the top ranking with an 8-7 finish.

Marcus earned his record for the week by being the only one to correctly pick the Bengals over the Lions and the big upset with the Colts knocking the Broncos from the unbeaten. Nicely done, Marcus.

The three-way tie now is for the final three spots between Asher, Jeff, and RDreamer. They are all five games back from SOB and six games back from the leaders.

Of the eleven staff consensus picks, we were correct on seven of them - Not a good record, really. Although we all correctly predicted the Giants would get their first win on Monday Night. But we all missed on thinking the Dolphins would beat the Bills, Patriots would complete the Ryan brother sweep, Bears would take care of the Redskins, and Ravens would take out the Steelers.

This week, probably the toughest game to call (at least for me) was the Raiders versus the Steelers. For this reason it is a bit surprising the entire staff picked the Raiders like a buncha friggin' homers. Although, technically we don't know RDreamer's pick yet. Maybe he'll surprise us.

I went back and forth all week on who to choose and there are good reasons why either team could take this game. This may be a consensus pick but it is anything but a lock. As a reminder, we all thought the Steelers would lose to the Ravens and all but one of us (Marcus) thought they would lose to the Jets as well and they won both games. So, I guess we either all win together or we all go down together.

If you include the Raiders pick, there are a total of ten consensus picks. The other nine are the Panthers, Chiefs, Patriots, Saints, Eagles, 49ers, Broncos, Packers, and Seahawks.
