The Oakland Raiders do not want to pay Carson Palmer the $13 million he is owed in 2013 under his current contract. As a result, there has been a lot of talk about how the Raiders will either ask him to take a pay cut, or they will cut him. Now, the pressure is on Palmer thanks to the help of someone most Raiders fans don't like very much, Tom Brady.
Yesterday, news broke that Brady extended his contract with the New England Patriots by a year, to three years. What's amazing about the deal is that it's total value is only $27 million.what essentially happened is that Brady added a year to his deal so that the Patriots could spread out the money he was already owed. That way, the Pats get some much needed cap space over the next two years.
This is the exact kind of leadership the Raiders need from Carson Palmer. Much like Brady, Palmer is on the back side of his career, and he had made a significant amount of money during his years in the NFL. Now, what should be most important is winning before being out out to pasture.
Not only would cutting his salary prove that Palmer's priority is winning rather than money, it would also pressure guys like Darrius Heyward-Bey to take a much needed pay cut as well. Tom Brady is one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the NFL, now, he is proving himself to be one of the best leaders in the NFL.
The only question that remains is what kind of leader Carson Palmer is going to be.
