Al Davis Memorial Combine Freaks: Safety

New, comments

We are in the home stretch of combine athletic drills. We now look at the best of the safeties.

USA TODAY Sports

When one thinks of those positions in which Al Davis values athleticism most, the defensive backs might just be the first people think about. The Raiders have a couple of prime athletes at the safety position which were targeted by Mr Davis.

Michael Huff ran a blazing fast 4.34 40-yard dash in 2006 which would beat any safety in this class by nearly a tenth of a second. Strong safety Tyvon Branch worked out as a cornerback out of Connecticut in 2008 and ran the second fastest time (4.31) at any position. Only running back Chris Johnson's record 4.24 40-yard dash was better. The Raiders converted him to safety and found a gem.

Here are this year's top athletic performers among the safeties at the 2013 NFL scouting combine.

SS Shemarko Thomas -- Best 40-yard dash (4.42), most reps bench press (28), best vertical leap (40.5), 3rd in broad jump (11'1")

SS Earl Wolff - 2nd in 40-yard dash (4.44), 4th vertical leap (39.0), best broad jump (11'2"), 2nd 20-yard shuttle (4.07)

SS Shawn Williams - 3rd in 40-yard dash (4.46), 3rd reps bench press (25)

FS Eric Reid - 4th in 40-yard dash (4.53), best vertical leap (40.5), best broad jump (11'2")

FS Matt Elam - 5th in 40-yard dash (4.54)

SS Keelan Johnson - 5th in 40-yard dash (4.54), 5th 3-cone (6.77), 2nd 20-yard shuttle (4.07), best 60-yard shuttle (11.53)

FS Josh Evans - Best 3-cone (6.64), 5th 20-yard shuttle (4.10)

SS Kenny Vaccaro - Best 20-yard shuttle (4.06)
