Raiders have opportunity to bring Nnamdi Asomugha back to Oakland

New, comments

The Oakland Raiders need a CB badly, and former Raider Nnamdi Asomugha is expected to be cut today.

The Oakland Raiders are in need of assistance at a number of positions, but few are more in need of an upgrade than the cornerback position. This was easily the Raiders' weakest position team wide in 2012, and both starters for the season are no longer under contract and are not expected to return to the Raiders. But even if the Raiders do re-sign some of the corners from last season, there is still a drastic need for a number one corner.

It just so happens that the last true number one corner the Raiders had is going to be available as a free agent. There are reports that the Philadelphia Eagles will cut former Raider Nnamdi Asomugha today. After being one of the best in the game with the Raiders, Asomugha has struggled to find any kind of success with the Eagles.

Now that Asomugha is being unceremoneously cut from the team, and with Darrell Revis on the trade block, Nnamdi may suddenly be much more affordable. Plus, he may want to come back to the Bay Area where he went to college and had all of his NFL success.

While the Raider Nation did not get the reunion it wanted with former coach Jon Grude, if Nnamdi is willing to come at a reasonably cheap price, the Raiders may have a reunion with one of the best corners to ever wear the Silver and Black. It is a long shot, but it also makes sense in a lot of ways.

UPDATE: It now looks as though the Eagles will not cut Nnamdi Asomugha today. But according to the story on, they will still release him, likely within the next few days.
