The Raiders have officially announced the signing of kick returner Josh Cribbs along with undrafted quarterback Matt McGloin. In corresponding moves, the team has cut linebacker Jerrell Harris and long snapper Nick Guess.
The addition of Cribbs gives the Raiders a proven veteran return specialist. He is expected to take on punt return duties as well as offer insurance at kick returner in case Jacoby Ford in lost to injury.
The 6-1, 215 pound Cribbs is the NFL career leader with eight kickoff-return touchdowns. He is a three-time Pro Bowl selection (2007, 09, 12) and was named as the kick returner on the 2000s NFL All-Decade team. He has played in 124 career games with 31 starts in eight seasons, all with the Cleveland Browns.
With McGloin entering the fray, the thinking was that the team would cut undrafted free agent signing Kyle Padron. They have yet to do so which means at this moment the team has five quarterbacks on the roster -- Matt Flynn, Terrelle Pryor, and Tyler Wilson are the others.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound McGloin set a career school record with 46 touchdown passes, and in 2012 set single-season program marks in completions (270) and passing yards (3,266), while tying the season standard in touchdown passes (24).
Jerrell Harris and Nick Guess were both off-season signings. The Raiders are deep at linebacker but with Guess gone, they now have just starter Jon Condo at long snapper. They had already waived undrafted free agent long snapper Adam Steiner following rookie minicamp.
