Reports have surfaced today that Raiders newly signed linebacker, Kaluka Maiava, is facing charges of assault for an incident in a Maui bar on March 17 of this year. He and his brother were served with a court summons on July 2.
The incident occurred just four days after Maiava had signed a 3-year, $6 million free agent deal with the Raiders.
Maiava and his brother, Ilima, were allegedly at the Life's A Beach bar in the Kihei Kalama Village on March 17 when they got into the altercation. Ilima also faces misdemeanor assault and criminal property damage charges.
The two brothers will appear in court on July 25 - the day the Raiders are due to report to training camp in Napa.
The team will have meetings on July 26 and take the practice field on July 27 so it is possible Maiava won't miss any practice days, but this still looks bad and won't sit well with the coaches or Reggie McKenzie.
Interesting is the Browns signed Raiders free agent defensive tackle Desmond Bryant and the Raiders sign the Browns free agent Maiava. Both had incidents resulting in charges being brought on them days of signing their free agent deals.
