While the Raiders have started off the 2014 season with an embarrassing 0-4 record, two rookies have shined. Because of their consistent play, outside linebacker Khalil Mack and quarterback Derek Carr are in the running for Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year according to NFL.com's Marc Sessler.
Sessler puts Mack third in the running and gives Carr an honorable mention. While Mack has yet to record his first sack, he has provided a considerable amount of pressure on opposing quarterbacks. But what has really stood out is his run defense. Through four games, Mack has 24 tackles including a team leading 3 for a loss.
Mack is the number one rated defensive rookie according to Pro Football Focus (membership required).
Carr has improved every week, even with an injured receiving corps and the worst rushing attack in the NFL. He has greatly improved at throwing while under pressure and is beginning to look more comfortable stepping up in the pocket when pressure arrives from the outside. Carr has completed 84/133 passes (63.2%) for 734 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions while maintaining a passer rating of 75.2
His chances of winning the award may be hindered by a high ankle sprain and sprained MCL he suffered last week against the Miami Dolphins. While it helps that the Raiders are on a bye this week, Carr may not be able to return by October 12th when the San Diego Chargers come to town.
Carr is the number one rated rookie quarterback according to Pro Football Focus.
While the Raiders are on track to have an even worse season than last year, Khalil Mack and Derek Carr are proving to be two great centerpieces to work around.
