Raiders sign safety Larry Asante

The Raiders today finally made a move to add depth to the safety position, announcing they have signed free agent safety Larry Asante. The three-year NFL veteran re-joins the Raiders after having spent time with the team in training camp.

Asante was a former round five pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2010. He has played for the Buccaneers (2010-11) and Colts (2013), appearing in 17 games with no starts.

The Raiders have been thin at the safety position for the past couple weeks. They lost Tyvon Branch for the season with a foot injury and then lost Usama Young for the season to a torn ACL/MCL.

With those injuries, the Raiders were down to Charles Woodson, recently re-signed Brandian Ross, and seventh round rookie Jonahan Dowling. Asante was the natural choice due to his experience in this defense in training camp and preseason.

To make room, the team waived linebacker Bojay Filimoeatu on Tuesday, cleared waivers, and has been added to the team's practice squad.
