George Atkinson III says he's been activated by Raiders

The Raiders will be without Latavius Murray for this weekend's game due to a concussion he suffered last week. Now running back George Atkinson III has tweeted that he has been activated from the practice squad to the active roster.

Atkinson is son of the legendary former Raiders defensive back. He was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame and after spending training camp and preseason with the team was waived and placed on the practice squad.

He adds running back depth as well as return abilities to the roster. Tony Sparano said in the press conference today that T.J. Carrie will resume duties as a punt returner and Charles Woodson to return kicks. Woodson is not the ideal choice to return kicks, so one would think that would be Atkinson's primary job on Sunday.

The Raiders don't have an open roster spot so someone will need to be released to make room. Some possible candidates for that would include Denarius Moore - who lost his return job last week - one of either Jamar Chaney or Ray Ray Armstrong who committed several penalties on special teams last week, or even Maurice Jones-Drew who has been ineffective as a running back this season and is buried on the depth chart.

UPDATE: The Raiders have announced they have placed Carlos Rogers on injured reserve to make room on the roster.
