It's been a while since I saw any position group on the Raiders named among the best in the league. So, much to my surprise, SB Nation writer Danny Kelly had the Raiders' linebacking corps rated among the better in the league.
The group was listed 11th on the list among the "Wildcard" linebacking corps along with the Buccaneers and Ravens. Here is what he had to say:
WLB Sio Moore, MLB Nick Roach, SLB Kevin Burnett, MLB Kaluka Maiava, WLB Miles Burris, SLB Khalil Mack, OLB Carlos Fields, Jr.
The Raiders have another high-ceiling, extremely athletic linebacker group. Sio Moore will be looking to improve on a nice rookie season and will line up opposite the number five overall pick in Khalil Mack, right now slated at the SAM spot. Roach is a solid veteran in the middle. The Raiders, of course, could get pretty multiple up front and ask Mack to rush the passer, so getting Burnett, Maiava and rookie Carlos Fields on the field is a possibility.
There were few positions on this Raiders team that could be considered set this off-season and linebacker was one of them. The team had established starters at all three positions in Roach, Burnett, and Sio Moore with decent depth in Maiava and Burris.
Then the team added a huge piece with fifth overall pick Khalil Mack. Carlos Fields is a small school standout the team signed as an undrafted free agent who has great potential.
They figure to have a solid group of linebackers who could make some noise this season.
