Raiders pre-draft position by position outlook: Offense

New, comments
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

With the draft upon us, we take a look at each position for the Raiders on the offensive side of the ball.

Quarterback

Roster: Matt Schaub, Matt McGloin, Trent Edwards

Need: High

Draft outlook: The Raiders will be looking to add a quarterback in this draft. The addition of Matt Schaub gives them some luxury to not reach for a quarterback. They may not go for one with the fifth overall pick but after that, there are a lot of good possibilities. I believe they look for a quarterback in the first three rounds.

Draft pick to watch for: Jimmy Garoppolo, Eastern Illinois

Running back

Roster: Maurice Jones-Drew, Darren McFadden, Latavius Murray, Kory Sheets, Jeremy Stewart

Need: Low

Draft outlook: This position is very well stocked at the moment with quite a few options to find the best three. A good running back can be had in the mid rounds of this draft but most likely when the Raiders pick comes up, other good players at higher needs would be the priority.

Draft pick to watch for: Rajion Neal, Tennessee

Fullback

Roster: Marcel Reece, Jamize Olawale

Need: Low

Draft Outlook: There is no draft outlook. The roster is fine as it is. They won't be using a draft pick on a fullback.

Draft pick to watch for: None

Wide receiver

Roster: Denarius Moore, Rod Streater, James Jones, Andre Holmes, Brice Butler, Greg JenkinsJuron Criner

Need: Moderate

Draft outlook: There is a lot of depth here but still no game breaking number one receiver. That is what the Raiders will be looking for in this draft and I envision that search taking place in the first two rounds. Reggie McKenzie said in his pre-draft press conference that he wouldn't pass up a great receiver to trade down for a good one. There are a few potential great ones in this draft.

Draft pick to watch for: Sammy Watkins, Clemson

Tight end

Roster: David Ausberry, Mychal Rivera, Nick Kasa, Brian Leonhardt

Need: Moderate

Draft outlook: Tight end is one of those positions at the moment that the team will be keeping in mind in case one of the top prospects are still on the board in the mid rounds, but otherwise it isn't a great need. There is a lot of uncertainty at the position but with that comes potential for a good group.

Draft pick to watch for: Marcel Jensen, Fresno State

Offensive tackle

Roster: LT Donald Penn, RT Menelik Watson, RT Austin Howard, RT Matt McCants, Khalif Barnes

Need: Moderate

Draft outlook: At left tackle the Raiders signed Donald Penn as a stopgap. At right tackle, the team hopes last year's round two pick, Menelik Watson can be healthy and live up to his potential. This position is the wildcard of this draft. The Raiders interest is uncertain as far as how high they go after it. It will depend on who is on the board at other positions and if they trade down in the first round.

Draft pick to watch for: Taylor Lewan, Michigan

Guard/center

Roster: LG Kevin Boothe, C Stefen Wisniewski, RG Austin Howard, Khalif Barnes, Tony Bergstrom, Lucas Nix, Lamar Mady

Need: Moderate

Draft outlook: A lot of attention was given to the guard spot this off-season. The Raiders' first free agent signing was former right tackle Austin Howard who they have pegged to play right guard replacing last year's starter, Mike Brisiel. There is a logjam at left guard but no surefire long term solution. Center is locked up by Wisniewski.

Draft pick to watch for: David Yankey, Stanford
