The Raiders have announced they have signed free agent S Jeremy Deering. There was a roster spot available so no corresponding player release was needed.
Deering is an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers. He originally signed with the Patriots but was waived following OTA's last May.
He will be a safety but has played at several different positions including running back, wide receiver, and kick returner. He didn't switch to safety until his senior year.
The 6-1, 209-pounder is an ideal candidate for special teams. He is a big, athletic all-around football player who returns kicks as well as plays on coverage teams. As a raw talent, he could be worth the shot to see if he can develop.
As a safety, he should help add depth while Usama Young is recovering from a quad injury he suffered during conditioning tests that has had him on the PUP list since the start of camp.
