When two teams meet for joint practice as the Raiders and Cowboys did today, there's always the risk of injury. And the first one happened not three plays into drills.
The Raiders and Cowboys defenses swapped fields to face the other team's offense. They began with some one-on-one pass drills. On the third pass attempt, Nick Kasa went out for a pass and while he attempted to shake defender, Ryan Smith, he appeared to slip on the turf and went down in a heap.
He layed on the ground wincing in pain clutching what looked to be his left leg. The Raiders continued with the drills, going the other direction as a cart came onto the field to take him off.
Dennis Allen had no comment on the injury itself, saying only that it "Didn't look good."
Mark Davis was also not happy about the injury and was not optimistic based on his view of what happened.
"We lost Kasa it looks like for a while and that's really disappointing," said Davis. "That's a position where we really can't afford to be losing people with David (Ausberry) out still."
Kasa was in the thick of a competition for the primary blocking tight end job with Brian Leonhardt. Now with him out, the job is Leonhardt's to lose with undrafted rookies Jake Murphy and Scott Simonson battling for the final spot. This is, of course, unless the Raiders sign another tight end which would seems likely at this point if only to have more bodies in camp.
Other injuries:
Justin Ellis was still not back as he recovers from a concussion he suffered in the Raiders' preseason opener in Minnesota. Chimdi Chekwa was still not practicing but Dennis Allen said he thinks Chekwa could return tomorrow.
That just leaves DJ Hayden, Usama Young, Neiko Thorpe, Lucas Nix, and David Ausberry as still not practicing.
