Usama Young comes off PUP, returns to practice

The Raiders got some good news today as reserve safety, Usama Young returned from the Physically Unable to Perform list. This is something Dennis Allen had said on Saturday he had hoped would be the case.

"The one guy that I am hoping is going to be out at practice on [Sunday] is Usama Young," said Allen via conference call. "I think he had a good week of rehab this past week, and I am hopeful that he'll be back out at practice tomorrow."

As Allen expected, Young was ready to go and practicing Sunday. Young had been on the PUP list all of training camp. He strained a quad muscle in conditioning tests. In his absence, the team signed free agent safety, Larry Asante.

With it being early in the week as they prepare for the third preseason game in Green Bay, it is possible Young could play against the Packers. If not, Asante would continue to be the primary backup to Charles Woodson at the free safety spot.

That just leaves cornerback D.J. Hayden (foot) and offensive guard Lucas Nix (knee) still remaining on the PUP list for the Raiders.

The team also confirmed the previously reported signing of free agent tight end, Kyle Auffray. In a corresponding move, they waived kicker Kevin Goessling.
