Raiders re-sign K Goessling, waive/injured safety Deering

John Walker -- Fresno Bee

The Raiders annuounced today they have re-signed former Fresno State kicker Kevin Goessling who they had signed prior to their first preseason game only to waive him days after. In a corresponding move, the team waived/injured safety Jeremy Deering.

Goessling was brought in to replace kicker/punter Michael Palardy who had an emergency appendectomy. Goessling was teammates with current Raiders quarterback, Derek Carr, at Fresno State for three seasons. The three-time All-WAC kicker hadn't kicked in a game since he left Fresno State in 2011. He had his first chance in the Raiders preseason game in Minnesota only to have his 44-yard attempt blocked. He should get another shot at it this week in Green Bay, but with the first cutdown coming next week, that could be his only chance.

Deering was signed during training camp after the team had lost both Usama Young and Shelton Johnson to injuries. The team has since signed free agent  Larry Asante and Young has come back off of the PUP list.
