Since the moment Jack Del Rio became a frontrunner for the Raiders head coaching position shortly after the end of the season, Mike Smith was thought to be his first choice as Defensive Coordinator. Despite that thinking, there had yet to be any confirmed reports of Smith coming in for an interview... until now.
Mike Smith is expected to interview for the Raiders Defensive Coordinator Position according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.
The Raiders interviewed Eric Mangini for the position today and up to this point, Mangini was the only candidate reported as having interviewed. Mangini is also in the running for the 49ers defensive coordinator opening.
Landing Mike Smith would be a win for the Jack Del Rio. Smith was his Defensive Coordinator with the Jacksonville Jaguars before he headed off to become the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. He was in Atlanta for six seasons before being fired this off-season.
The Raiders have already hired their other two coordinators -- OC Bill Musgrave and STC Brad Seely. They have also hired Mike Tice as OL coach.
