If you were hoping for a dark horse hire of Jason Tarver to remain as the defensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders then you are officially out of luck. We knew that the San Francisco 49ers were interested in interviewing Tarver and it was speculated that it might be for their opening at defensive coordinator.
The team was correct, the job position was not. The 49ers have officially hired Jason Tarver but not as their defensive coordinator, it is as their linebackers coach with a bonus title of senior defensive assistant.
Tarver had worked for San Francisco for many years before being on the Raiders staff so their interest in him is no surprise. Tarver had been the Offensive Quality Control coach in San Fran from 2001-2003, their Assistant Running Backs/Offensive Assistant coach in 2004, and then their Outside Linebackers coach from 2005-2010.
Jim Tomsula, the new head coach for the 49ers, was hired as their defensive line coach in 2007 so much of Tarver's previous tenure in San Francisco was working alongside Tomsula. Needless to say, they have a strong familiarity with each other and rekindling that working relationship makes a lot of sense.
There was an interesting note from Levi Damien on Twitter regarding Tarver's hiring in San Francisco, it marks the 4th coach of the Raiders staff to find a new job elsewhere already for 2015. That is even without any of them being Tony Sparano or Bobby April who both are likely to be hired somewhere for next season as well.
