With the injury to Justin Tuck, the Raiders were in need of some depth at defensive end. They went about making that happen today by resigning former draft pick Shelby Harris to their active roster from their practice squad. In a corresponding move, the team waived undrafted free agent defensive back Tevin McDonald.
The 6'2", 290-pound Harris was drafted by Oakland in the seventh round of the 2014 draft out of Southern Illinois. He saw some action with the Raiders last season, especially in the preseason, but this year had been relegated to the practice squad. Since Justin Tuck's injury will have him headed to the IR list, Harris looks to get some more run with the team. The Raiders have been rotating defensive linemen regularly to keep everyone fresh and this should give Harris a chance to show what, if anything, he can do.
McDonald was a free agent signed out of Eastern Washington. With Oakland's depth issues in the secondary and McDonald's familiarity with Ken Norton Jr..'s defensive system he will surely be on the team's speed-dial should an additional roster spot open up.
