It's official folks, Amari Cooper has won the fan voting for Pepsi Rookie of the Week for Week 7. It is somehow his first Rookie of the Week Award win, although he is the current favorite to win the Pepsi Rookie of the Year Award after the end of the season.
Cooper put up monster numbers against the Chargers, catching five passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. This effort put him ahead of the likes of Rams RB Todd Gurley, Jaguars RB and former Cooper teammate TJ Yeldon, Vikings LB Eric Kendricks, and Saints LB Stephone Anthony.
The big game in San Diego puts Cooper up to 33 catches for 519 yards and three touchdowns on the season, which places him squarely in the upper echelon of NFL wide receivers. He is easily on pace to become Oakland's first 1,000 yard receiver since Randy Moss and has solidified himself as a main focal point of the Raiders' offense and a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. While this may be Cooper's first Rookie of the Week award, it is unlikely that it will be his last.
Cooper faces a tough test against the stifling defense of the New York Jets on Sunday. If the Raiders are to overcome that challenge they will need Cooper to have a great game against Darrelle Revis and company. A good showing against Revis could well have Cooper nominated for a second consecutive Rookie of the Week award.
