Raiders call up tight end Gabe Holmes from practice squad to active roster

The Raiders had a vacant roster spot after having waived undrafted rookie safety Tevin McDonald on Thursday. They filled that spot with another undrafted rookie; tight end Gabe Holmes, who was called up from the team's practice squad.

With three tight ends on the roster, it would appear the addition of Holmes to the active roster is primarily for special teams purposes, but it does make one wonder about the status of the team's tight ends coming into the game. Clive Walford is listed on the injury report with a quad injury but practiced full all week and is probable for the game.

Holmes was signed out of Purdue this offseason. The 6-5, 255-pound former basketball player showed a lot of promise in training camp and was on the roster for the season opener, but inactive for the game. He was waived after that and placed on the practice squad where he has been ever since.

Initially when McDonald was waived, it was thought to be in preparation for the team to add Nate Allen to the active roster. Allen has been on partial season injured reserve since week two and is due back this week. Jack Del Rio confirmed on Friday that Allen will be added to the roster which means the team will have one more roster move to make to clear a spot for him.
