Starters: Latavius Murray, FB Marcel Reece
Depth: Roy Helu, Trent Richardson, Taiwan Jones, Michael Dyer, George Atkinson III, FB Jamize Olawale
Make no mistake, the Raiders are pinning their hopes on Latavius Murray to be the workhorse for this team. They added Roy Helu as a change-up back and receiver out of the backfield and took a flyer on journeyman former top pick Trent Richardson. They also finally gave up on Darren McFadden. Marcel Reece returns at fullback
Condition: Touch and go
What do we know about this group, really?
Must Reads
In five games late last season, Murray had a couple good games which jumpstarted the Raiders offense. Other than those couple games, he was rather pedestrian. His presence was almost solely responsible for two of the team's three wins last season, but what of the three blowout losses in between? And what of the sub 4 yards per carry and zero touchdowns over his final four games? One thing we can say is he's a step up from Darren McFadden. That's something.
Helu is not a feature back in a power run scheme as the Raiders run, but he will provide an extra dimension to the offense which will keep the defense honest. That's important in a fast paced offense like the one the Raiders will try to run this season.
Trent Richardson is a hail mary. He fizzled out quickly on two other teams after the Browns made him the third overall pick in the 2012 draft. He has had weight issues and his comments this offseason suggest he doesn't have the work ethic or attitude to be great. He is worth a shot, but probably best to view his presence with a sense of cautious optimism.
After that, there isn't much. Two undrafted free agents in Michael Dyer and George Atkinson III, along with Taiwan Jones who is really more of a special teams player for the team.
Marcel Reece is a three-time Pro Bowl fullback who can carry the rock in a pinch. Still, it has been a while since the Raiders have been able to properly utilize his skillset as a receiver out of the backfield. And with Bill Musgrave not known for utilizing fullbacks at all, that could either help Reece or hurt him. And it could mean Jamize Olawale as the backup fullback.
