What condition the Raiders position is in: Defensive end

New, comments

We begin with our defensive analysis starting with the defensive end position. As usual we rate either Strong, Stable, Touch and go, Serious, or Critical.

Justin Tuck returns on one side, while the Raiders add Mario Edwards Jr in the second round of the draft to man the other.  They also drafted Max Valles in the sixth round. Benson Mayowa also returns and they re-signed versatile reserve C.J. Wilson.

Condition: Critical

You can expect the Raiders will be utilizing the versatility of this group as many of them can also play defensive tackle. But the question following last season remains - where is the pass rush coming from?

Last season Tuck managed to lead the team with just 5.0 sacks which is the second lowest output since he became a fulltime starter in 2008. And at 32 years old, those numbers are unlikely to go up. The Raiders also got some pass rush from Khalil Mack from the outside linebacker spot and they will be relying heavily on him improving those numbers this season.

Mario Edwards is a stout run defender but has never been a great pass rushing threat. Benson Mayowa started out well last season but disappeared in the second half. So, unless rookie sixth round pick Max Valles can be a pleasant surprise as a rookie, pass rush is still a big concern.
