The Raiders are back at it for a run of three practices in preparation for their second preseason game. The regular season is approaching; just 26 days away. As usual, we look at the best to represent that number in our countdown. It was a tough call at 26.
Who wore it best: S Vann McElroy (1982-90)
When speaking of the great defensive backs in Raiders history, rarely does Vann McElroy get mentioned. Not only was he the team's starting free safety for most of the 80s, he was a two time Pro Bowler, including the 1983 Super Bowl season when he led the team with 8 interceptions. Keep in mind, that team featured the legendary cornerback duo of Lester Hayes, Mike Haynes, along with safety Mike Davis. McElroy added an interception in the playoff win over the Seahawks that year. He finished with 31 interceptions in his 8-plus years with the Raiders which is currently the fourth most in franchise history behind only Willie Brown (39) and Lester Hayes (39), and Terry McDaniel (34).
Who's wearing it now: RB Roy Helu Jr
This Bay Area native (San Ramon) spent the first four seasons of his career in Washington. He signed with the Raiders as a free agent this offseason as a change-up back and receiver out of the backfield. He has missed the past week of training camp as well a the team's first preseason game with an injury. He is expected to see the field a lot this season as a complement to starting running back Latavius Murray.
