What condition the Raiders position is in pre-draft: Running back

New, comments

We check on the running back position for the Raiders pre-draft to give it a condition of either Strong, Stable, Touch and go, Serious, or Critical.

Starter: Latavius Murray
Depth: Roy Helu Jr, Taiwan Jones, George Atkinson III

Latavius Murray returns as the starter with Helu and Jones as his primary backups. Atkinson is a camp body and practice squad guy, keeping the legacy player in Oakland.

Condition: Touch and go

Murray ran for 1066 yards last season, but he and the offense struggled down the stretch. He went over 100 yards twice last season, with the last time coming in the week 8 win over the Jets. He put up 96 yards the following week against the Steelers at the midway point. After that his yards per carry went from 4.77 over the first 8 games to 3.25 over the final eight.

The team didn't get much of anything from Helu or Jones who combined (113 yards), just barely outgained fullback Jamize Olawale all by himself (110).

The team has made no reservations about their need to add another back to complement Murray. They attempted to sign a back in free agency, but wouldn't break the bank to do so and therefore failed to lure anyone to Oakland. The next step is the draft, where outside of the first round talent of Ezekial Elliott, there is usually good options available even as late as the fourth round.
