As most experts have pointed out, it seems that the 2016 draft is very top-heavy — with a group of about 6-7 guys head-and-shoulders above the rest. Unfortunately for the Raiders, the odds of any of those guys falling to No. 14 is unlikely.
As a result, many have fantasized about the Raiders trading back a few picks, adding a pick or two and getting a player in the same tier as they would have anyways.
But I'd like to ask another question: what about trading up?
The way I see it — aside from the quarterbacks — the elite players in this class include: Myles Jack, Ezekiel Elliot, Deforest Buckner, Joey Bosa, Laremy Tunsil, Jalen Ramsey and Vernon Hargreaves. With that in mind, consider this scenario: it's pick No. 9 and six of these seven players are gone (plus Carson Wentz and Jared Goff) — at what price would trading up to No. 9 become worth it?
For me, each of these players has a different value for the Raiders due to positional depth in the draft and positional need — so, let's take a look at what I'd be willing to trade for the right to draft each of these guys... (note, I'm not saying the team holding the pick in question would accept these deals, merely where I'd draw the line)
Myles Jack: Pick No. 14 and No. 44
The most valuable guy of the bunch, but one that comes with a massive asterisk: if he's healthy. Assuming the Raiders' doctors checked his knee out and things came back clear, I'd be willing to part with a first and second rounder to acquire arguably the best player in the draft at arguably the team's biggest position of need.
Jalen Ramsey: Pick No. 14, No. 75 and No. 154
Like Jack, Ramsey comes as one of (if not the) best players in the draft — and at a position of massive need. The only difference for me comes in the depth of cornerbacks in this draft. While Ramsey is better than, say, William Jackson III — I'm not sure he's worth giving up a second rounder to upgrade. For a third and fifth rounder, however, I'm pulling the trigger
Deforest Buckner: Pick No. 14, No. 75, No. 234
Similar package as I'd offer to grab Ramsey (swapping a fifth for a seventh here) simply because Buckner is a beast. Not a massive position of need, but he's such an elite player that he'd be worth the move.
Joey Bosa: Pick No. 14, No. 75, No. 234
Getting repetitive here, but Bosa is just too good to not think about moving up for. Is he a perfect fit? Probably not, but I'm sure they'd find a way to make it work.
Ezekiel Elliott: Pick No. 14, No. 75, No. 234
I love Elliott and I love the fact that he's at a position of relative need, but I'm not willing to completely mortgage the future for anyone who plays the running back position. Elliott is a true talent, and would be an excellent fit in Oakland — I just think he'd need to fall outside the top 10 before Oakland begins looking like a realistic landing spot.
Vernon Hargreaves: Pick No. 14, No. 114, No. 234
Fantastic player at position of need, but, like Ramsey, his value is a bit shot due to the depth at the cornerback position this year. That said, if he fell towards picks 11 or 12, and the price to move up dropped enough, I'd be all ears.
Laremy Tunsil: Not interested
It's not that Tunsil isn't a really good player, I just don't see the Raiders taking a tackle in the first round — let alone sending multiple picks away to find one. If they wanted a tackle, one will likely be available at No. 14.
