Reggie Nelson headed to Oakland for free agent visit per report

New, comments

Nearly a month since free agency opened, the top safety still on the market is Reggie Nelson. The team with the biggest need at safety remains the Raiders. Therefore Nelson coming to Oakland has long made sense. And now there is a chance that merger will happen as Nelson is set to visit Oakland according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Usually when free agents make visits, especially this late in free agency, a deal happens. Nelson has plenty of tape and the two sides typically agree to financial terms before scheduled an actual visit. After that, it's usually just a physical.

Nelson led the NFL with 8 interceptions last season. It was his fifth season as the everyday starting free safety in Cincinnati. He was likely not retained due to the fact that he will turn 33 in September.

His numbers have been extremely consistent over much of his career, averaging 3.3 interceptions, 9 passes defended and 72 tackles per season while missing just 6 games in nine years with the Jaguars and Bengals.
