Among those who received an invitation to Raiders rookie minicamp was former Southern Miss running back, Jalen Richard. Following the camp, he announced that he had officially signed with the team, tweeting out a photo of him putting pen to paper.
I can tell you from watching this 5-8, 207-pounder go through drills and team sessions in rookie minicamp that he was quite impressive. He also has a similar build and running style to Raiders 5th round pick, DeAndre Washington.
Washington, not coincidentally, said he drew comparisons to Oakland native Maurice Jones-Drew, who was drafted by the Jaguars when Jack Del Rio was the head coach. Del Rio clearly has a type he prefers in his running backs, especially considering Latavius Murray is an imposing 6-3, 225 pounds and the Raiders were looking for a complementary change-up back for him. Perhaps two of them.
Richards will have the opportunity now to compete for one of those running back spots throughout the offseason and training camp.
